@Parsifal - your story made me laugh - and I remember an episode which involved my now deceased daughter: Then - then 14 years ago - my grandchild was 3 years old - s. husband was otherwise engaged and S. was involved in some kind of 'music' weekend held at an elegant Manor House - wonderful buildings and gardens, but no more room at the 'inn' for me, who was supposed to look after little N.
She booked a place for me via "air B&B' 'in the village'. We get there, first at the 'estate' then she drops me off in the village, goes off - I go inside a very humble looking home and the landlady escorts me up a wooden staircase to my 'bedroom' - the stairs, unwashed for eons, untreated, with splinters - the bedroom was under the roof - a straw mattress, a pillow with lumps, two dark-coloured blankets - and daylight twinkling through the roof tiles - it was summer though - thoughts of what horrors expected me in the way of toilet, bathroom? I sit down, totally dejected, 'what was my daughter thinking?' I try to be 'a good girl' but cannot abide the place and determine not to stay there - whilst I am musing, landlady comes up the steps and hands me some tea in a chipped enamel beaker - I felt I was in prison and wouldn't survive the night, being of a fanciful mind, I had the most vivid images of 'murder in the night' etc. - it was Dickensian.
I decided on 'Revolution' and when S. came to pick me up, I refused to get back into my hole. She managed to get me a tiny room on the 'estate' - and I then had fun with my granddaughter for the next 2 days, whilst the artists were turning the world of music upside down. Funny, I had totally forgotten about this, until your fawlty towers reference - better left that way. I am guessing in those days Air B@Bs weren't subject to scrutiny by a supervisory board etc. - I could actually organise my home around such a business - i have an extra shed to one side with electricity but only a dirt floor - so some investment would be necessary.
But I did love Fawlty Towers - even watched some favourite episodes (my favourite: "the Rat")
Go well
