@NoBoDe - how do you scare them? just by looking at them? or maybe preaching incantations? .... and do they come running ??
I have really no idea how you would smoke them from a plant - I have eaten the seeds of the edible poppy, which I grind in a herb mill, or the old-fashioned grinder I brought with me; you can buy them in some shops in larger quantities, normally they are available in small packets on the spice shelf of the great supermarkets, but apparently they contain enough opium, to not pass a drug test, if you have eaten just one croissant with the poppy filling.
So it is quite possible - as @Marum Katze says, that I was addicted as a child, just smelling the pulped seeds. I know, if I have a lot of that cake I make (Mohnstrudel) which is really tasty - my digestion slows down, but have enough self restraint these days to not do this.
