Hi Margaret - used to know a lady from our club (ethnic ) and she made the most amazing vanilla slices, pre-cut - should have got the recipe off her - I tried them once, too, same result as yours - you need a really sharp knife and cut carefully. I will be trying a 'Dobos' Torte soon - just a nice chocolate-filled cake but has caramel topping which needs to be pre-sliced . . .
