Was having a debate with Consuela last night after watching a segment on the ABC 'The Business' about a firm that had brought in a 4 day working week (taking Wednesday off), and had tripled their annual income as a result.
Leaving aside my previous historical observations that the 5 day working week was little more than a construct negotiated by unions and capitalists, which was now outdated, and in my opinion harmful to the family unit and the psychological wellbeing of the proletariat, I applauded the idea - of the 4 day working week.
Nevertheless, our debate was thus: While Consuela agreed that the abandonment of the so called 'hump day' (Wednesday) was the best option, I on the other hand, put forth the view that Friday would be more preferable, both for the employee and the economy generally.
My argument was based on several realities. First, the two day weekend was not enough time for an individual to unwind. Second, a 3 day (long weekend) would allow greater scope for holiday travel, time with the family and a benefit to the tourism industry and the general economy. And third, people would be less stressed and happier, which in turn 'may' enhance the individuals health and lessen the burden on the medical/hospital system.
Naturally, Consuela disagrees with my analysis, given chicks are always right - "apparently!"
Even so, regardless of your current work/retirement status, what work day would you abandon - Wednesday or Friday?
