When my brother married his girlfriend (tender age of 23, as was commonly the case way back then), he had a shock coming to him. His new wife did not know anything about pastie making. Nothing at all!!! She never did learn either........
My brother became then very very conscious of the cost of marrying (well, one of them anyway) and admitted, he just thought women and pasties were a package deal. Sheeeesh. lol
None of this flaky pastry though. It was rolled to within an inch of its life, because the ratio between the meat and vegetable component and the pastry was as large as it could be achieved. No filling ever split out though, such was her skill.
I think it was the swede turnip which gave pasties their distinctive perfume and there was no mistaking it! It permeated the house, really.
