I think we do much the same thing. I add milk, like you, but it is hot milk and water. Then the waiting period enables the oats to soak and easy to eat. I used to cook oats in my slow cooker, the timing of which was governed by a timer switch which I bought for the purpose. The result was extremely creamy oats. These days, too lazy. I would sometimes forget to turn them on, for example.
I cooked them in a water bath with the oat bowl sitting in the cooker's bowl. I always buy wholegrain oats and never the pre-cooked ones. I never buy flavoured ones as they are a marketing ploy which makes large amounts of money for the company marketing it. Easy enough to add one's own fruits, berries, or whatever you have on hand or wish to eat.
Oats are a brilliant food.
