That wall on the A31 in Dorset
7ShareSaveCharborough Park is surrounded by one of the longest brick walls (over two million bricks were used in its construction) in England built between 1841 and 1842 by the then owner of the park John Samuel Wanley Sawbridge-Erle-Drax who had successfully had the new Wimborne/Dorchester turnpike moved further away from his house, a detour of over half a mile. The wall runs alongside the A31 and is punctuated by 'The Stag Gate' at the northern extremity and the 'Lion Lodge' at the eastern most entrance. Charborough House has been owned by the same family since Elizabethan times and their surname is now Plunkett-Ernle-Erle-Drax, the Earles/Erles having arrived in Dorset from east Devon circa 1500, and continued via several female lines. The current occupier is Richard Drax, the Conservative Member of Parliament for South Dorset.Although the stag on top of 'Stag Gate' appears to have five legs, the fifth 'leg' is actually a tree stump which was originally incorporated into the sculpture to add strength.4,611 views12 Feb 2011
Hi Tau,
Yes I have seen several of those Martin Clunes travel programmes. He really is a fine figure of a man, not grumpy.
He looks rather spectacular when riding a horse. I believe he owns a farm and has several horses of his own.
Dorset is beautiful, gently rolling countryside with many quaint picturesque villages, quite idyllic.
Funnily enough we would generally pass through there, rather than stay, as we were usually headed for Cornwall where my brother in law lives.
Crumbs, King Alfred did achieve a great deal in his relatively short life.
Now you given me a memory of THAT WALL.
We used to pass it so often and it fascinated me.
So a few years ago, I found a video about it, shame the weather was rotten, but it is above for you to see.
Sorry about that big black square above, I was trying to copy the information about it. Do google tube that wall on the A31 in Dorset, it is fascinating.
Aha, the information has now appeared, last time I checked, the estate was owned by an MP in London.
