JULIA Gillard has declared herself to be a "strong, feisty woman" as the Coalition accused the Prime Minister of reviving gender-based politics.

In a sometimes fiery question time, Ms Gillard was pressured by Tony Abbott over her handling of Labor's controversial media reforms, some of which face defeat.

The Opposition Leader asked whether Ms Gillard would regard the defeat of media bills as a lack of confidence in the government, and challenged her to call an immediate election if they failed to pass.

Ms Gillard replied the election date had been set and added:”It will be a contest counter-intuitive to those believing in gender stereotypes, but a contest between a strong, feisty woman and a policy-weak man, and I'll win it.”

Opposition frontbencher Christopher Pyne angrily demanded Ms Gillard withdraw a further comment he said she had made.

“The Prime Minister answered the question and then she, as an aside, said for some unknown reason 'misogynist Tony is back',” Mr Pyne shouted.

“I would ask her to withdraw it because it is a slur on the Leader of the Opposition and a desperate play from the Prime Minister.”
