Xstrata and RIO have started their talks for thermal coal pricing from 1st April 2008. A figure suggested is US$70 per tonne (US$54 last year) that is close to current spot pricing.
It will be a few years before Moolarben reaches 10mtpa (production cost estimates in 2006 were only AUS$30 per tonne for the open-cut mine).
If Felix sell a 20% interest in Moolarben, as suggested by MD Mr Brian Flannery, they will have enough cash to pay for both open-cut and longwall mines, providing the 49% sale of Yarrabee goes ahead.
