Some of the HFT practices debatably have a positive overall effect (debatably) however given it's been demonstrated in the US that they are front running orders (even to the point of buying broker/trading platform customer order queues to do it), and given they are likely doing the same thing here (either indirectly via multiple markets beyond the ASX now existing, i.e. Chi-X, dark pools, etc etc, or directly via buying broker/trading platform customer order queues) one has to question what level of regulation of what they are doing is really going on (and do the regulators even understand ALL the practices of the HFT's - many in the US who you would expect would/should have known didn't know what was really happening until quite recently).
