Fertiliser prices on the rise again

    By Eliza Wood

Fertiliser prices are expected to rise over the coming months as a result of the financial crisis.

Prices had come back to reasonable levels in the second half of 2008 as sales dropped off and stocks piled up. Production also slowed during this time.

The stock piles have now been used up, and prices are moving skyward again.

David Ford from Impact Fertilisers says the amount of fertiliser available has dropped significantly.

"The production of ammonium phosphates is actually down by 7.5 million tonnes and urea is down by five million tonnes. So the market has reflected all those prices changes and has now become tight with all those lost tonnes."
