Feuding claimants to nickel project urged to shut up

    By PHILIP DOWA
LANDOWNER groups that are disputing over the multi-billion kina Ramu nickel project have been urged to restrain from making defamatory remarks that could prevent the project from taking off.
White House Resource Management chairman Augustine Baimur made the call after David Tigavu of Basamuk expressed his viewpoint in The National last week, suggesting he (Mr Tigavu) and the landowners were working in isolation.
Mr Baimur is a senior member of the Duakia Owzah landowners who are not just the customary recognised group but also the SML titleholders of the three-zone portion where the nickel/cobalt deposits will be mined.
He challenged Mr Tigavu to work closely with his organisation for the good of the landowners, project developers and the nation as a whole.
He said landowners needed to co-operate with one another to ensure the speedy realisation of the Ramu nickel project.
A Chinese company, China Metallurgical Construction Co that bought out the Highlands Pacific for the rights to develop the mine, is doing a cost analysis of the project and is expected to have the final details ready within this year.
