A mine or 2, I have worked at , I sometimes watched as samples were bought in to 'sample prep' for analysis .
The samples were crushed to a powder in a small ( less than 1 cubic metre) crusher, after which some of sample was put in a 'crucible' then to furnace . After which the sample , which was small (less than a match head), was inserted into the mass spectrometer , and analysis taken .

All this was done in under 24 hours.

I maybe wrong about the process technically , not the time frame. Feel free to correct me. (hi to Capt. Kaos from old Telfer days .. '85, '86, '87)

I don't understand why it takes months and months for results. ( well ... i have theories )

I guess I should have taken more notice , but that was where the women worked.
