US suspects Zarqawi fled Fallujah

The Pentagon says it believes suspected terrorist leader Abu al-Zarqawi has already escaped from Fallujah.

Lieutenant General Thomas Metz, the multi-national force corps commander, says he believes the most wanted man in Iraq has escaped the city.

"Some of the senior leaders probably have fled," he said.

"I would hope not but I've got to assume that those kind of leaders understand the combat power we can bring."

Destroying Jordanian-born Zarqawi's network and capturing or killing him is one of the key objectives of the offensive in Fallujah.

Lt Gen Metz says US forces still have "intelligence capabilities" in Fallujah dedicated to finding Zarqawi but the hunt for him stretches across the country.

He says US casualties in the operation so far have been light and he expects the urban warfare to continue for another few days before the city is under US control.
