@wowog the original Venice came into being slowly - over a period of time - there were marauding folk from northern Europe - the Asian steppes (Attila the Hun in 400) - on land, robbing and killing everyone, so the local peasants found a way to escape into the lagoon, and found small islands, built shelters, or platforms originally, until the miracle of cities, Venice, was created. Venice is built on a foundation of tree trunks - amazing to think about it. I had a few marvellous days in Venice, now a long time ago - but do wonder about the locals, who must get heartily sick of the constant invasion of tourists . . . . Ciao Taurisk
