WELLINGTON, Jan 7 (Reuters) - Australian stocks were flat on Thursday, though retailers jumped after stronger than expected sales data for November.
Retail sales rose 1.4 percent for the month, well above analysts expectations of 0.3 percent in a Reuters poll.
The benchmark S&P/ASX 200 index <.AXJO> dipped 0.5 of a point to 4,920.9 at 0045 GMT, after a flat finish on Wednesday. New Zealand's benchmark NZX 50 index <.NZ50> was 0.2 percent higher at 3,279.71.
STOCKS ON THE MOVE * Furniture and electricals chain Harvey Norman rose 3.2 percent to A$3.93, electronics retailer JB Hi-Fi was up 2.5 percent to A$21.85 and department store David Jones gained 2.2 percent to A$5.20.
