and just to prove the point on the depths being drilled in the GOM offshore, here is a brief summeary the first two announcements that popped up when I typed in:

"recent oil discoveries in the Gulf of Mexico"

21st March 2103, via Bloomberg news:

Anadarko Petroleum Corp sp rose to $86.40 after the 'Shenandoah-2' discovery offshore Gulf of Mexico (GOM).
Well drilled down to 9.6 KM (6 MILES) beneath the seafloor in water 5,800 feet. Encountered oil deposit 1,000 feet thick.
Still being evaluated but estimated at 700 million barrels of oil.

25th Mar 2013. Chevron Corp reports oil discovery offshore of the GOM (off coast of Louisiania) in 6,127 feet of water, at a depth of 31,866 FEET (6 MILES down). 'Coronado' discovery still being evaluated.
