We recently paid off a mortgage on one of our properties and arranged for the title document to be returned to us from the lender. We were notified on completion that we no longer get a hard copy of the title deed and that it's registered in our names and kept with the titles office that we are the title holders. We are in NSW, so I'm not sure if this is a State procedure or Federal.
