When I worked in the corporate world the entire focus was on "Shareholder value". Everything else such as customer service was a cost. If the business didnt make at least 10% profit increase year on year the CEO and board lost their jobs. Result was that the entire focus was on profit and customer retention was only ever looked at as a necessary evil.
