Illawarra coal miner fined $8.4m after missing carbon deadline

Gujarat NRE has been ordered to pay $8.4 million for failing to report thousands of tonnes greenhouse gas emissions.

Federal regulators revealed the shortfall charge on Friday after Gujarat did not report a single carbon unit by the deadline of June 17.

Two Illawarra companies in the Indian coal group, Gujarat NRE Coking Coal and Gujarat NRE Wonga, failed to provide details of their emission output to the Clean Energy Regulator, The Illawarra Mercury reported.

Gujarat NRE Coking Coal was ordered to pay $7,020,520 for 234,800 carbon units while Gujarat Wonga, the group’s Wongawilli mine, incurred a charge of $1,356,862, equivalent to 45,830 carbon units.

The regulator also notified the company that if it did not pay the money by June 24, it would start to incur interest of 20 per cent per annum.

A Clean Energy Regulator spokesman said if Gujarat did not pay, regulators would pursue a formal debt recovery process.

Gujarat was one of only four companies that missed the June 17 deadline, which was met by more than 370 other big emitters.

Carbon emission prices were applied to Australia's biggest polluters from July last year, requiring companies to report and pay a price for their carbon units.

Companies had to pay an amount to cover 75 per cent of their yearly emissions by June 17.
