Government concedes coronavirus finger-prick tests 'of limited use' in diagnosing COVID-19

The Federal Health Department has conceded 1 million finger-prick testing kits, purchased by the Government at the height of Australia's response to the coronavirus outbreak, have limited use in diagnosing COVID-19.

Key points:

• The tests were ordered in haste as COVID-19 cases in Australia surged, with a view to testing their accuracy before use
• The Government says the tests are not accurate enough to reliably diagnose COVID-19
• The tests may be used down the track in surveillance of infection in the community

The point-of-care serology tests (POCTs) were being heralded as a cheaper and quicker way of testing people believed to have been infected with the deadly virus.

But the Health Department said further testing had been done on the effectiveness of the kits.

"The Doherty Institute studies confirm POCTs are of limited use for the diagnosis of acute COVID-19 infection as many infected patients have not yet developed sufficient antibodies to enable detection by these tests," the Health Department said in a statement.

"However, the sensitivity of these tests has been demonstrated to improve with increasing duration from symptom onset and are sufficiently accurate that a positive result in a symptomatic patient could be presumed to be positive for COVID-19.
