My electrical engineer friend said the problem with grid scale battery storage is they have to store electrical power of wind farm or solar in DC current and then have to convert it back to AC again for grid power line distribution or dispatch. Each time conversion you lose 10-20% of energy and power.
He thinks the problem of bottle neck effects and efficiency to release power at grid scale rate from battery storage at the moment is the design of modular cells and DC to AC conversion. It may be not possible to have battery storage at scale of GW size which is necessary for backing up excess wind and solar power.
