Iron Mike,
Unfortunately freedom of the press and freedom of expression are not protected by our constitution as they are in the USA.
The Liberal Party must share some blame in the erosion of freedom of speech. They allowed government officials to decide what thoughts are able to be expressed.
Once we start cataloguing a list of views which may not be expressed we are on the road to censorship. It is just a matter of degree or opinion about what should be on the list. Better that the list didn't exist.
The move toward censorship has utilised the banning of 'hate crimes'. This started by banning denying of the holocaust, then 'racial vilification'. Now we find that The Australian newspaper is accused of hate crime for criticising the ALP. Hate is a very elastic term.
People should be allowed to express their opinions. If those views are foolish people will reject them. Censorship and indoctrination of minors by the state should have no place in Australia.
