    When it was decided to build the Snowy scheme I'm sure there were a lot of doubters . It is very easy to see the logic of it now because we can appreciate the benefits .

    Can you imagine the doubters back in those days ? The amount of money they were going to spend ? Bringing in all those foreigners to do the work ? Life was alright before the Snowy scheme wasn't it ?

    Power stations such as Loy Yang were built by governments . In fact , the majority of our entire power sytem was built by governments . So , they were subsidised right from the get go . They weren't built by private companies that had to be profitable from day one .

    Large modern technology often needs to be subsidised in order to get established . Because we want to improve our standard of living , things need to be funded . The important question is that in the end will the product be able to support itself and will we all benefit from it ?

    I think we all know the answer to that one .
