It took the old emperor and the military a while to wake up to themselves- this happened in March 1945 and they kept on fighting till august until they dropped two really big bombs (atomic). That is a five month period.
Plus if there was a ground assault on Japan would have killed so many allied soldiers lives.
The Japanese and allies do not talk about the 10's of millions killed by the Japanese during the occupationof China during the war...
The poor old chinese citizen copped it from all sides during that period of the 20th century....
