Japan was a very different story in that it is a democracy , not all the money was repatriated anyway. However consider the sovereign risk/mode of government and what you would do if it were happening to you.
The Chinese are not repatriating and their buying has only begun especially in view of curbs being placed elsewhere.
We may both be right or wrong but it is dangerous to compare to the past if the dynamics are not exactly the same.
Additionally it would be interesting to see what amount of Chinese money coming here is from HK, they would be driven by a different set of circumstances to those on the mainland.
Many in HK are not shy to express their chagrin at the way things are panning out with housing and are looking at greener pastures.
