They don't use the same exchange that everyone else uses , the one they use is called a Dark Pool . It was meant for large block trades so they don't effect the price on market , but now it's mainly used for small trades hunting liquidity by checking where other institutions have their buy or sell side positions ( so basically bots checking where majority of the other bots positioned ) . It also makes it easier to sell stocks down , that is why you see stocks sell off at the end of the day by one or two shares.
