Your new here, I’ll try and answer most of your questions and query’s to set your mind at ease, and ease the mind of any new reader..
Yep, the production cell is primitive and was created in a shed.. a big shed by a metal fabricator. It would be easy to duplicate the concept by watching that video and possibly even create graphene from a pencil say..
What first graphene is going to do is possibly charge the customer the cost of the production unit to cut down on shipping costs, as you say... and have ‘just in time production’. The exfoliation cell that you saw in the video is the ‘prototype’ model that has been scaled up and is currently being built in their new Henderson production workshop. They will have a production capability of about 90 tonne per year from that facility..
Now the reason that you wouldn’t be very successful in building your own exfoliation cell in your back yard is that you would need the feedstock to make it work well..
First graphene has mines in Sri Lanka producing vein graphite. A very pure version of graphite that exfoliates to graphene at a rate of a around 80-90% in fgr’s production units.
So if fgr were to install the production cell on site the company that bought it would need to buy vein graphite to make it work at its optimum.. or pay a royalty per produced to first graphene.. there are a few business models that would work.
Now.
Onto super capacitors.
Super caps are a static storage system that stores charge between 2 plates of (in this case) Graphene. There is no chemical reaction to store the energy, so, no, there is no lithium in the super cap at all..
These supercaps can store large amounts of energy but, at the moment, less than li-ion batteries. But they can be charged in seconds, and they can be charged thousands of times without degredation.. where li-ion degrade from the first day they are used, and can only be charged hundreds of times until they die.. especially under large loads like in power tools..
Is this the new battery of the future.. I think so..
It may need to be charged twice as many times as a li-ion battery to do the same job, but it can be recharged 10x more often before it dies.
Will the ‘BEST’ battery that FGR are partnered up with be the super cap of choice... who knows but at the moment it is at the forefront of production, and looking good. Will it be surpassed, probably, but most other supercaps are using a similar tech, so it’d be like choosing between energiser or duracell.. which do you choose? They work the same..
I agree it is a risk to produce it, but fgr is a spec stock and if it comes off, as you say, the rewards are quite large..
