A discussion about A2 whole milk powder is perhaps specially appropriate in the light of recent scientific findings that suggest A2 is not only important for babies – it’s important for mothers as well. Here’s why.

It comes down to recent research that you won’t find in the news media, and even the a2 Milk Company doesn’t publicise it because it’s not allowed to point out the health risks of its rivals’ products. And don’t expect your doctor to tell you either, because the medical profession isn’t aware of it yet.

We know that all cows’ milk was originally A2 (like goat and sheep milk) until some cows became affected by a genetic mutation that caused them to produce A1 milk. We also know that human mothers’ breast milk is naturally pure A2. So it’s logical to assume that A2 infant formula is better for babies than formula containing the routine mix of A2 and A1.

We also know that the problem with A1 milk is that it produces a morphine-like product in the human digestive system known as BCM7 that is potentially harmful. Many individuals have a digestive enzyme that can break it down, but others don’t. And the problem becomes more serious with those of us – especially babies – who have what’s called a “leaky gut” which allows the BCM7 to pass through the gut wall into the bloodstream.

Once in the bloodstream it can cause havoc in various parts of the body. It can even pass through the so-called blood/brain barrier (this was formerly doubted, but not any more) and become a causal factor in neurological diseases such as autism and schizophrenia. Overseas researchers have recently been studying the role of BCM7 in apnoea, a sleep-related condition that is part of the sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS, or “cot death”).

It’s been known for some time that there’s a link between BCM7 and SIDS, but it was assumed that if a baby was breast-fed there was no way for BCM7 to be getting into its blood and causing SIDS. But apparently it’s not quite as simple as that.

By studying the blood of babies who came close to dying of SIDS, researchers have found they tended to have an unusually high amount of bovine BCM7 in their blood even if they were breast-fed. Surprise.

Some mothers already take care to drink only A2 milk during pregnancy on a precautionary basis, but it was assumed that after birth there was no risk of BCM7 transmission to the baby via breast-feeding. However, the overseas research has established that it is possible for a mother to pass BCM7 to her baby via her breast milk, especially if she has drunk significant amounts of cows milk containing A1.

The obvious implication of this is that a breast-feeding mother who wishes to avoid all risks associated with A1 might consider sticking to A2 milk herself. If liquid A2 milk is not available, A2 whole milk powder might be a very appropriate option. It's good to have on hand for emergencies anyway.

There isn’t a lot of medical research into health risks associated with A1 milk in Australia and New Zealand (why not?), but internationally it’s accelerating. It now involves a number of medical conditions including diabetes, celiac disease, heart disease and even multiple sclerosis in addition to SIDS, autism and schizophrenia. Of course, A1 is not the only risk factor in these conditions, but at least it’s now an avoidable risk in markets where A2 (milk and powder) is available. And a source of relief for mothers who are very conscious of the importance of the first weeks and months in a child’s life.

Love your post. I've started to read "Devil in the milk" by Keith Woodford and it has really blown me away of all the research done in the "milky way". Although I have no "adverse"affect from drinking/using A1 milk, I am very much intrigued in the research in A1 and A2 milk.
