KUANTAN: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's conflicting stance on the Lynas Advanced Materials Plant (LAMP) shows that he is willing to do anything to gain political mileage.
The opposition leader who promised the people here at a Himpunan Hijau rally on Feb 26 last year that the project would be cancelled if Pakatan Rakyat came into power, sang a different tune on Thursday when Australia's Sydney Morning Herald quoted him as saying that the rare earth processing factory would be allowed to continue operating if a new inquiry found it to be safe.
In the report, Anwar was quoted as saying that he would be "the first to champion the plant" if the company came up with a "convincing argument that there is no risk to people's safety and security".
The statement raised eyebrows among Gebeng folk, as many felt the opposition leader, who had demanded the plant's closure, could have something up his sleeves.
Balok Perdana Village Development and Security chairman Zainon Ali said if it was true that Anwar now backed LAMP, then he had been twisting the facts on the rare earth plant for personal gain.
