    Considering that under Howard, the defence budget rose from $A10.6 billion in 1995-1996 to $22 billion in the 2007-2008 budget—taking the total to 9.3 percent of government outlays and 2 percent of gross domestic product (GDP), perhaps it's not so unreasonable of the States to claw back some of OUR taxes to spend on US at home.
