so it was reported that they lost 20,000 fish. If they weigh about 3kg ea then that's 60t gross of fish. It was also reported that they were worth $NZ2.2m - I don't know why the news media are reporting this in $NZ rather than $A, but that would be worth about $A2.o23m, which works out at about $34/kg. That's nothing like the market price, so it must be the cost of production, which is not profitable. Also the article says that the 20,000 fish represents half their stock, so it is a very small operation. Their biomass (prior to the loss) of say 40,000 fish would amount to around 120,000 to 160,000 kg (120-160t). Our biomass at the end of Dec '17 was 2147 tonnes - very much larger than this operation in Pt Stephens.

When you check out the Huon Aquaculture website, their focus is entirely on salmon, and there is no mention of this YTKF operation at Pt Stephens. It seems to me that the Pt Stephens fishery is very much in its infancy, and very experimental. It does not present a competitive threat to us, and probably wont for at least the next 5 years, by which time we will have grown substantially as well.
