mahi mahi can be caught with a variety of techniques
at the fads in Perth we troll medium size marlin lures between the FADs, but dont often catch them this way
usually we just drop a pilchard over the side with a circle hook (weighted with a ball/bean sinker if birds are about) as we drift past the FAD, let them hook themselves
the trick is to get there before everyone else or be the only people there(friday work day is best) and late in the season when they have grown a bit (they put on about 2 kilos in two months!)
when they go off the bite its because they are well fed or spooked perhaps. it takes about two hours for them to get their appetite back, so we go from FAD to FAD and then return
if you dont have the boat then rent one , thats what we used to do. recommend a 7m ally as minimum in Perth and only on a calm day with not too much of the Freo doctor as well in the arvo
