local market expected to open stronger

    The Australian share market is expected to open stronger today following a volatile session on Wall Street and strong gains on European markets.

    At 0708 AEDT, the December Share Price Index futures contract on the Sydney Futures Exchange was up 33 points at 3,881.

    In economic news today, RBA deputy governor Ric Battellino will speak at an Insolvency and Trustee Service Australia congress in Sydney.

    Federal Treasurer Wayne Swan will address the Financial Services Institute of Australia in Brisbane.

    In company news, Westpac Banking Corporation releases its annual results, as does Australian Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd.

    Companies hosting annual general meetings include Newcrest Mining Ltd, Centennial Coal Company Ltd, Toll Holdings Ltd, Gunns Ltd, Downer EDI Ltd, Fantastic Holdings Ltd, Austock Group Ltd, Bradken Ltd, APA Group, Beyond International Ltd, GWA International Ltd and Warrnambool Cheese&Butter Factory Company Holdings Ltd.

    The Financial Services Regulation Summit 2008 continues in Sydney, while the Mining 2008 conference continues in Brisbane and the Goldfields Mining Expo concludes in Western Australia.

    On the local bourse yesterday, The benchmark S&P/ASX200 index ended up 51 points, or 1.34 per cent, at 3,845.6, while the broader All Ordinaries index gained 50.4 points, or 1.34 per cent, to 3,805.8.
