Five teens killed in hit and run

    February 18, 2006

FIVE teenagers were killed and seven injured when they were hit by a car in Victoria's north-west tonight.

The scene was described as chaotic after a group of at least 12 youths were hit by a car at about 9.50pm (AEDT) in Mile Avenue, Cardross, near Mildura.

Police are searching for the driver of the vehicle.

Rural Ambulance spokesman John Mullen told AAP at least seven teenagers, all under the age of 20, were being treated for injuries at Mildura Base Hospital.

Two teenagers are in a critical condition, while another two have serious injuries.

Mr Mullen said the injured victims would be taken by Air Ambulance to the Royal Adelaide Hospital or the Alfred Hospital's trauma unit.

At least another three youths escaped life-threatening injuries but still require medical treatment.

Mr Mullen said the teenagers were believed to have been at a party and were walking in a large group along Mile Avenue when they were run down by an unknown driver.

Victoria Police spokesman Senior Constable Wayne Wilson confirmed that the car left the scene after the teenagers were hit.

"Five teenagers were hit by a car and killed," Sen-Constable Wilson said.

"The area has been sealed off as a crime scene."

Specialists from two major collision units were flown to the scene from Melbourne as soon as the news broke, Sen-Constable Wilson said.

The crime scene will block off Mile Avenue for some time, as police continue their investigations. Victoria Police have sent the coroner and major collision investigators to Mildura.
