I find it hard to believe. Absolutely shocking by not stopping - the car must be a bloodied mess. Incredible to think the driver has killed 5 people and seriously injured others. The mass mdeia will be all over this and the driver will be crucified and rightly so.

Re-Cousins - I have never liked him. He is a kid that is very talented with a ball but frankly a complete embarassment in everything else. It seems he finds it hard to string three words together - he has befriended some pretty ugly types here in Perth.

    Cousins 'wasn't drunk'

BROWNLOW medallist Ben Cousins thought he was under the .05 blood alcohol limit, but panicked when he saw a booze bus, his friends claim.

They said the champion West Coast Eagles skipper had abandoned his leased Mercedes and run when he saw a booze bus early last Sunday because he had been worried about another run-in with police.

Cousins is almost certain to lose the Eagles captaincy over the incident.

Police revealed they would definitely charge the midfielder, but he was expected to escape with little more than a $100 slap on the wrist.

Friend Nathan Hewitt, who also ran from the Mercedes four-wheel-drive, but was caught, yesterday told friends the decision to run had been made in a heartbeat.

The real estate agent said there had been no sinister motive.

Sources said the pair had panicked and bolted.

The besieged AFL captain cannot be charged for fleeing a booze bus because he stopped about 20m up the road and had not been directed by police to pull over.

Instead, he faces the minor charge of obstructing traffic by leaving his parked in the middle of Canning Highway.

WA Police traffic boss Insp Neil Royle yesterday confirmed Cousins would be charged.

"We will have a result," Insp Royle said.

"At best, you can't abandon your car in a carriageway."

Guests at the wedding of Cousins' childhood friend, Blair Taylor, said the Eagles captain had been sober when he had left the reception at East Fremantle Football Club.

They said he had only one or two beers during the reception, sitting at a table with partner Samantha Druce and other friends.

"There was no way he was over the limit, I would bet my life on it," wedding guest Charles Degois said.

"Believe me, you see some people who are off their heads at weddings, but Ben certainly wasn't.

"A lot of people were drunk, but not Ben. He was pleasant to all the guests - he spoke very well.

"Ben never danced. He spoke to people who came to the table. He was accommodating to all the ladies who asked for photos with him."
