When you innovate, consumer prices come down. American families are saving thousands of dollars a year in gasoline, diesel and natural gas - reliable fuels that are generally much cheaper in America than in the rest of the world. Consumer prices are down because oil & gas operators pay less to drill and frac.

As compared to a decade ago, American shale operators are receiving a ~90% discount on the price to place a pound of proppant downhole - the material that maintains a downhole path to produce hydrocarbons for decades. At the start of the shale revolution, their all-in service price to place a handful of proppant in a frac was close to $1/lb. Today, that is closer to $0.10/lb.

This all-in service price reduction reflects many changes, including changes to the fluid system used to frac. Smaller mesh proppant and availability of more velocity through higher pumping power has reduced the need to carry proppant with viscosity. As a result, fluid systems have simplified to just a few essential components.

The plot below, constructed with the help from Dean Magnuson and based on thousands of Texas frac jobs in FracTrends, shows how complex guar-based gel systems have been making way for much simpler - and cheaper - fluid systems.

In an increasing number of shale wells, a little friction reducer, bleach and soap is all a nimble modern frac’r needs.

It's a good thing frac'ers were free enough to innovate instead of being banned by luddites like in other parts of the world.
