Don't want to get to wrapped up in this either, but when a vertical flare burns it can be very different depending on weather. Think of a candle in a still room, it is very skinny and tall, add some breeze it's blown sideways and from above looks a lot bigger. The flare where I work can be 100m+ high on a still day or 100m sideways on a windy day.
Don't read too much into the pictures, you're on something good. So long as the drillers stop making mistakes.
