I think I can answer that. The Reader's Digest version is... We are Tribal by nature and need to belong and feel that we are accepted as members. Religion meets this need. People share this experience with others, who are then attracted. The process then becomes similar to a self-fulfilling prophecy.
I don't think that things like doctrine other than that which makes people feel good about themselves play a big part.
