No it's not a red herring if you remember what you wrote: "You can't take angle measurements from a curved surface.". If it really matters to you to get a perfect right-angle triangle, you just model an accurate one one from x-many tangents (approaching infinity if you like) off the curved surface to effect your base with "straight line".
