When I first joined the navy there was nothing at Garden Island. By the time I had paid off they had begun to build the navy base, HMAS Strirling.
The base has since grown to be Australia's biggest navy base.
Having a large naval base in the Indian Ocean is strategically important for Australia and it's allies.
The growth potential for the base is huge. Anyone that has been to Pearl Harbour will know how big strategically placed facilities can be.
A very important consideration for such establishments is energy and freshwater security.
That is where CWE comes in, the Garden Island Microgrid Project will ensure the base will eventually be able to operate independently from the power and water grids. I believe the microgrid will increase in size in step with the expansion of the naval facility. A contract to supply power and water to such a facility puts this arrangement into the Gold Star category.
