However, developing countries like Malaysia is facing a big problem. Inflation has been on an increasing trend in the recent years while average salary of most people has not increased much at all. For example, someone who was earning MYR3,000/month 5 years ago is still earning pretty much the same amount at present. Then again, a meal now costs almost double of what they had to pay 5 years ago. Most people spend their entire life working just to pay for their house, car and to send their kids to school. If you think this is bad, it's multiple times worse in Indonesia or other developing nations.

The point is even if there are cheaper unlimited plans in these countries in the next few years, it will still be a 'luxury' to majority of the people. Unlike us, they have to put food on the table for the family first before thinking about unlimited data plans.

Welcome to the western world Nick, everything you have mentioned is currently the norm and not restricted to developing countries. I'm in a top wage bracket and still have never had an unlimited mobile contract for the simple reason, I still think I can't afford it, too busy paying the mortgage,car and sending the kids to school. Not had a wage rise like most people for the last 5 years as prices rise. Most of us are all in the rat race whether we like it or not.
