In my opinion it would be an election winning strategy for the Coalition to announce that in government they would float the ABC on the asx and every Australian over the age of 18 would receive free shares. This would make it truely “our” ABC and as shareholders we would be entitled to vote at annual AGMs and have a voice as to how the ABC is run and by whom. There would finally be some accountability as to the ABC’s commercial performance as opposed to the current situation where there is no accountability for its lack of ratings. An asx listing would force it to provide content that people actually want to watch so it can generates revenue and stand on its own feet rather than continue to be a drain on the taxpayer.

package up all the govt owned media into the one deal, ABC, SBS, Nitv. Not sure the shares would be worth anything as their ratings are so terrible now but at least it would bring accountability to them
