Circa 1960 used to go through flooded crossings up in the Pilbara in Series 2 Diesel Landrovers, foot flat on the accelerator to stop back pressure through exhaust stalling motor...... water coming over bonnet and in through the vent slats above the dash..... also, open doors to let water in to stop flotation effect. In later vehicles, pays to remove fan belt so plastic fan doesnt flex forward into radiator. ... there are tricks. Then there were the guys in the Volkswagon, advised against driving through a crossing... "No probs, this car floats.." ,,,,, and it did, down the creek. They were lucky and survived....the car didnt. They MIGHT have made it if they had opened the doors to let the water in and through.
