I hope you meant sarcasm, no cynic here.

Xi Jinping is feeding the media its rhetoric so they can do what they do best, that is to oversensationalise ... spread his propaganda and in effect achieve what he is setting out to do, that is to demonstrate to his people that he is a leader that will fight for what they believe is theirs.

This has been going on for a very long time and if China really wanted war, they probably wouldn't be making so much effort to reduce greenhouse emissions and spend so much money building infrastructure for quarantining tourists and planning for a reopening of its economy. China barely has enough energy to keep its lights on, let alone go to war.

The West are making moves to bolster their presence in the region and so China must react. All parties involved do not want war, but all leaders involved must show they are not afraid and will defend their people and allies. The media will be happy that there is something they can write about to fill up space on their websites and get clicks for more advertising revenue.
