This is what I got from the interview. This is not the first time. Time and time again, we will see flusters from both sides. These games of brinkmanship surface to pander to national interest, not principles. The Taiwan file gets taken out from the cabinet, dusted off again, to make a point.

Eventually, ruffled feathers will smooth. The two sides will meet by year end. The pendulum will swing back to open trade again. The Americans want their Christmas gifts. The Chinese need to develop the interior. Both sides play to a domestic audience.

As the interviewee said, both sides know there are no winners in a shooting war.
