My thoughts went back to that exchange of emails as well and the BEWG partnership is exactly the kind of foundation that needs to be put in place now in order to achieve the objective of replacing IC revenues by 2023 and then continuing that growth trajectory into the future.
I also recall Richard saying our R&D budget is relatively small and we've achieved a lot with such a small R&D team and budget. But as you correctly point out, other key factors to success include having the right product range and marketing/sales capacity & flexibility.
As with all business negotiations, both sides need to step away with a win in order for it to close. Our trade-off is sharing the know-how and technology transfer that will be required as part of this R&D development partnership... but it is also that know-how and technology that will enable Fluence to benefit from BEWG's R&D budget (product range), market influence and established sales channels (marketing/sales). Moreover as you say HS' position on the National Committee of Experts on Wastewater Treatment in villages and towns is probably the key 'intangible' that Fluence will gain out of this new relationship.
So we can expect a lot more R&D poured into Fluence's MABR, new products and a behemoth driving marketing/sales and more broadly the market adoption of the technology.
Fluence could have held onto the technology and tried achieving this themselves and only selling Fluence's product suite... but if the decentralised market is only a small pond that grows slowly, there is no point owner the lion's share of a pond. Sharing the technology with a player like BEWG and having the support of HS means that small pond is going to be a lake very soon... and in time a sea of opportunity. Expanding and tailoring your product range and then having it pushed out into the current market (and tougher new markets like water re-use) by BEWG will have that effect. And at that stage, even a small share of the sea will be magnitudes greater than the large share of a small pond.
In the meantime Fluence's existing products will likely see an uptake in interest from a partnership such as this... if BEWG want the technology for its push into the decentralised market... other players can access it now and win some early decentralised market share. On that note, an update on China Rail can't be too far away...
