I have done the research, with a Professor at Purdue Uni in the USA who specialises in airborne transmission, Prof Qingyan Chen, basically confirming what bacci says.
The problem is that the particles hang around for a while inside the aircraft. That's simplifying what the good Professor says but he implies planes need passengers to be separated, such as no middle seats being booked.
