Toyota's approach to green hydrogen has faced criticism for several reasons. Scientists have protested the Toyota Mirai, a hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle, arguing that it does not align with net-zero goals. The main concerns include:

    • Hydrogen Source: Most hydrogen used today comes from fossil fuels, meaning the Mirai often relies ongrey hydrogen, which is not truly clean.

    • Energy Efficiency: Green hydrogen-powered fuel-cell vehicles require three times more renewable electricity than battery electric vehicles (BEVs), making them less efficient.

    • Infrastructure Challenges: Hydrogen refueling stations are scarce, making adoption difficult.

    • Cost Issues: Hydrogen cars remain expensive to run compared to BEVs.

Toyota continues to push hydrogen technology, but many experts believe battery electric vehicles are the more viable solution for decarbonizing transport
