You'll be unsurprised to know, BC, I don't source my military info from General Gina!...I don't believe it's 2% or 5% .....it's whatever it takes to, AT THE VERY LEAST, act as a deterrent.
I prefer to listen to experts in their field.....our Air Vice Marshalls, Admirals, Generals and the Department of Defence. I also strongly believe in incorporating insights from those employed at the front lines, which I believe, is a fundamental necessity for high quality, efficient leadership/management, be it the military, or be it industry in general.
However I do agree with you, Mr Cat, we do need to urgently increase investing in defence. Like industry, military technologies are rapidly evolving at exponential rates. In the not-too-distant future, for instance, wars may be fought from in front of screens with the emergence of drones, autonomous vehicles and robots as is already happening.
Who knows what's next? Therefore there is a high probability risk of investing in equipment which is obsolete before it even hits the shelves. The challenge is the optimal allocation of resources between current and emerging technologies. That would also have implications for recruitment policies. Do we require more innovative computer nerds in uniform in front of screens?.....possibly/probably?
